McDaniel finishes third at Messiah Invitational
WESTMINSTER, Md. – Andrew Winfield (New Windsor, Md./South Carroll) went 3-0 with a pin to win the 174-pound weight class and lead McDaniel to a third-place finish at the Messiah Invitational in season-opening wrestling action on Saturday.
The Green Terror finished with 64.5 points and had five wrestlers place in the top four in their respective brackets. Messiah won the seven-team event with 122 points while Johns Hopkins was second with 96.
In addition to Winfield’s first, Ferris Bond (Gaithersburg, Md./Northwest) and Brock Glotfelty (Grantsville, Md./Northern Garrett) finished second at 197 and heavyweight, respectively. Zach Hetrick (Hanover, Pa./South Western) finished third at 165 while Tim Hall (Westminster, Md./Westminster) was fourth at 133.
After a bye, the top-seeded Winfield, won by major decision over Waynesburg’s Jason King 10-1 before pinning Case Western Reserve’s BJ Greenman in 3:15 to advance to the championship bout, where he defeated David Jones (Messiah), 5-0.
Bond needed just a single victory to advance to the championship match, defeating Messiah’s Dando Speers, 8-2. In the final bout, Bond, the No. 2 seed, fell to top-seeded Tyler Schmidt (Johns Hopkins), 10-5.
Glotfelty got a 1-minute, 17-second fall and a 18-4 major decision victory to advance to the semifinals, where he moved forward with a medical forfeit win.
The second seed in the bracket, Glotfelty was pinned in the second period by No. 1 seed Matt Williams (Ursinus).
Hetrick got a pin in the sixth minute before falling to the consolation bracket with a 6-2 loss to Case Western Reserve’s David Bernholt. Hetrick used a second pin and an 8-6 decision over Messiah’s Trey Speers to wrestle back to a third-place finish.
Hall was pinned by Garrett Rini (Case Western Reserve) in 2:52 to drop to the consolation bracket, where he was awarded a medical forfeit victory and pinned Waynesburg’s Josh Boyle in 1:19. In the third-place bout, Messiah’s Josh Craig, the top seed in the bracket, won by major decision, 15-2.
McDaniel returns to action at York (Pa.) on Wednesday. Match time is 7 pm.
