York downs McDaniel in opening dual of season
YORK, Pa. – Luke Panizzi recorded a 9-0 win at heavyweight to put the cap on a 30-21 York (Pa.) victory over McDaniel in non-conference wrestling action on Wednesday.
Tim Hall (Westminster, Md./Westminster) got the first of three pins for the Green Terror (0-1) but the 22nd-ranked Spartans (1-0) won six of the 10 bouts in their first action on the season.
After Hall, by virtue of his 1-minute, 37-second fall at 133, gave McDaniel a 6-5 lead, Ryan Catton won by forfeit at 141 to put York on top for good, 11-6.
Eric Rush (149) added a pin in 5:57 before John Niedrich (157) pushed the lead to 23-6 with a pin of his own just nine seconds into the second period.
Brian Alwine stretched the lead to 26-6 with a 3-1 win at 165 before Courtney Nightengale (Sublette, Kan./Cimmaron) answered with a 9-3 win to start a stretch of three straight wins for the Green Terror to pull the visitors within 26-21.
Andrew Winfield (New Windsor, Md./South Carroll) and Ferris Bond (Gaithersburg, Md./Northwest) each recorded pins during the run.
Winfield (184) got a 3-minute, 39-second fall before Bond (197) recorded his pin in 6:20.
Kyle Flickinger opened the match with a 15-0 technical fall in the second period at 125.
McDaniel returns to action at the Navy Classic on Nov. 17. Action begins at 11 a.m.
