Prestigious Programs
Give Students an Edge

Senior Mary Yates and junior Triet Bui spent the summer doing research at Yale University – one of the top laboratory facilities in the world — and returned to campus convinced that graduate school and lab work were in their futures.

The Biochemistry-Chemistry majors landed at Yale through separate programs. Mary, from Phoenix, Md., was a research fellow with the Sackler / National Science Foundation Research Experience University. She has decided to pursue a Ph.D. and ultimately conduct research in drug synthesis. Triet, from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, was an intern in the Discovery to Cure program at Yale’s School of Medicine. He will continue his research next summer at Yale and plans to pursue a Ph.D. combined with an M.D.  FULL STORY

First-year students walk at night with candles.

Traditions Brighten
First Day on the Hill

As dusk fell on Move-In Day Aug. 20, members of the Class of 2018 lit candles during an evening ceremony in Baker Memorial Chapel to symbolize the College’s original 1867 imperative of bringing students “out of darkness into light.” Selected from a pool of 3,427 applicants, the class comprises one-third first generation college students while more than one-fourth are students of color. Almost half of the class represents the top 25 percent of their high school classes, 42 have joined McDaniel’s Honors Program and four form the inaugural group of Dorsey Scholars, who receive scholarships that cover full tuition, room and board for all four years.

FIRST JOB: Customized Sports Training

McDaniel Plan Inspires
2013 Grad’s Business

John LaRocca’s paid internship with a large company that provides sports performance enhancement training taught him a lot. Mostly, he learned that he wanted to start a similar business targeted to teen athletes, but with customized speed, strength and agility training tailored to each sport, delivered by experts in that sport. “Just like the McDaniel Plan does for academics.”

Shortly after graduation, the Exercise Science major and Green Terror soccer player launched Beltway Trainer. A former NBA player, a former University of Maryland football standout and a D.C. United soccer player highlight the staff roster. Cheering clients include both individuals and high school teams who have upped their game.
