Army veteran and Honors student Shannon Travis prepares for career in U.S. Foreign Service

Experience fuels
College studies

Shannon Travis did things a little differently than most college seniors. The Political Science and International Studies major experienced U.S. foreign policy firsthand in Iraq and Afghanistan before she stepped into the classroom to learn the theories behind it.

The combination, or, in Travis’ words, a “healthy mix of experience and education”  landed the Honors student a highly competitive internship with Women International Security (WIIS) this summer as program assistant for its Combat Integration Initiative. The organization is supporting the initiative as the military works to meet Congress’ mandate to open all branches to women by the end of 2015.

34 alumni are among authors of national genomics research paper

Authentic research
In classroom lab

Look closely at the 34 McDaniel alumni listed as authors of a recently published genomics research paper, and you’ll find eight soon-to-be M.D.s, eight Ph.D. candidates, two nurses, four teachers, several researchers and a few students of physical therapy, veterinary science and optometry.

All of the McDaniel authors were once students in Biology professor Susan Parrish’s spring Genomics class and, more importantly, lab. In class, during the spring semesters of 2008–2012, they conducted a genomic analysis of the Drosophila (fruit fly) Dot chromosome through the Genomics Education Partnership.
