McDaniel College is proud to be home to Fulbright Scholars. We are dedicated to giving the support needed to all faculty who wish to pursue a Fulbright Scholar award. Students who wish to pursue a Fulbright Fellowship should contact the College’s Fulbright Program Advisor for support and guidelines. Faculty wishing to invite to McDaniel College a Fulbright Scholar who is visiting the U.S. for one year at another institution may apply through the Occasional Lecturer Program.

Fulbrighters worldwide affect thousands of lives each year, and the scholars themselves benefit from the new perspectives and knowledge gained by immersion in foreign cultures. Professor Mohamed Esa (Foreign Languages) was selected to participate in the Fulbright German Studies Seminar, “Muslim Minorities: Opportunities and Challenges in West European Societies. German and French Experiences.” Dr. Esa planned to use what he learned in future courses, presentations for the campus community, and outreach to German teachers in the United States. (Spring 2006)

Bosnia and Herzegovina: Paul B. Miller, Fulbright Scholar
Professor Paul Miller (History) won a Fulbright Occasional Lecturer travel award to bring to McDaniel College Bosnian Scholar and Professor Dubravko Lovrenović. Professor Lovrenović visited McDaniel College to give a campus-wide lecture on crucial contemporary issues in Bosnia, and in general with the current situation in Bosnia-Herzegovina and the still volatile former region of Yugoslavia. He was joined by extramural scholars who are also experts in this area. Professor Lovrenović was also a guest speaker for faculty and students in the Departments of Political Science & International Studies, History, and Philosophy & Religious Studies. (Spring 2008)

Professor Miller first headed to Sarajevo as a Fulbright Scholar in Fall 2004. He taught a history course on the Holocaust or genocide at the University of Sarajevo, worked on curricular development with the Faculty of Islamic Studies, and helped acquire resources for the library. Dr. Miller is currently at work on writing a book about the memory of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo, the event that ultimately led to World War I. (Fall 2004-Spring 2005)

Nigeria: Muslih Tayo Yahya: Visiting Fulbright Specialist
Professor Muslih Yahya, of Arabic and Islamic Studies in the Department of Religious Studies at the University of Jos in Nigeria, came to McDaniel College through the Direct Access to the Muslim World initiative sponsored by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. Dr. Yahya introduced the McDaniel community to Islamic societies and cultures both in and out of the classroom, teaching a mini-course on Islamic culture, presenting public lectures, and leading a faculty seminar. (Spring 2006)

Cameroon: Debora Johnson-Ross, Fullbright Scholar
Professor Debora Johnson-Ross (Political Science and International Studies) spent 10 months teaching at the University of Buea and conducting research on the political process in Cameroon. Upon her return to McDaniel College, Dr. Johnson-Ross used the experience to teach her course Contemporary African Politics. (2006-2007)

Armenia: Gil Harootunian, Fulbright Scholar
Dr. Gil Harootunian visited Yerevan State Linguistic University to lecture and research the introduction and role of Western-style writing practices in higher education in Armenia, a new nation and fragile democracy. That work led to a $275,000 institutional-level Fulbright award for three years of educational exchange. (2001-2006)

India: Gregory D. Alles, Senior Fulbright Research Scholar
Professor Gregory Alles (Philosophy and Religious Studies) has won a second time a Fulbright Scholar award to India to study and document the rich body or oral literature, especially epic literature, of the Rathawas, a scheduled tribe in eastern Gunjarat. (2007-2008) Professor Alles won his first Fulbright to India to conduct a project focused on the religion and rhetoric of the Valmiki–Ramayana at four Indian universities: M. S. University of Baroda, the University of Pune, the University of Rajasthan–Jaipur, and the University of Allahabad. That research led to Dr. Alles’s book, The Iliad, the Ramayana, and the Work of Religion: Failed Persuasion and Religious Mystification, published by Penn State Press. (1988-1989)
