Program Specific Initial Admissions Requirements

Best Initial Teacher Certification
  • Completed application for graduate study
  • Submit the non-refundable application fee
  • Official transcripts verifying completion of an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.75
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • PRAXIS I, GRE, SAT, or ACT test scores that meet the MSDE minimum requirements
  • All prospective candidates in the BEST program must successfully complete an in-person interview with a BEST advisor
  • Complete a criminal background record check through fingerprinting and disclosures
M.S. in Counselor Education
  • Completed application for graduate study
  • Submit the non-refundable application fee
  • Official transcripts verifying completion of an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.75.
  • Three recent letters of recommendation from undergraduate faculty or employers

  • Passage of the American Sign Language Proficiency Interview (ASLPI)

Elementary Math Instructional Leader

  • Initial Certification in elementary or early childhood education with 27 months of successful teaching experience
    • Note: Your 27 months of experience must be completed by the end of the program

Romance Writing (Graduate Credit)
  • Completed application for graduate study

Romance Writing (Noncredit)
  • Students must download and complete the noncredit registration form. You must register for courses at least 2 weeks prior to the course start date. Courses must be taken sequentially. Be sure to include "Romance Writing CE" in the "description" portion of the online payment form. Noncredit registration forms can be e-mailed to Ms. Sheila Deane at sdeane@mcdaniel.edu or faxed to 410-857-2752 (attn: Sheila Deane).
  • Cost per course is $1,350 for the 2013-2014 Academic Year. If you are registering for multiple courses at once, please be sure to include your total payment amount on the online payment form. Payment is due prior to the beginning of each course. Payment questions may be directed to the Ms. Pat Tyler in the Bursar's Office at 410-857-2208 or ptyler@mcdaniel.edu.
M.S. for Reading Specialists
  • Completed application for graduate study
  • Submit the non-refundable application fee
  • Official transcripts verifying completion of an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Initial teaching certification for Early Childhood, Elementary, Secondary or Special Education
  • State-designated qualifying scores for the Praxis Exam or equivalency.
  • Following the admission process, each candidate is individually advised and a preliminary program plan is outlines for the first twelve graduate credits in Reading (RDS 540, RDS 542, RDG 532, RDG 533 and/or Reading Elective)
M.S. in School Librarianship
  • Completed application for graduate study
  • Submit the non-refundable application fee
  • Official transcripts verifying completion of an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0
  • Three letters of recommendation, advisor approved
  • Acceptable test scores on Praxis I
  • Copy of initial teaching certificate**

*Students not meeting this criterion may be admitted to the program on a conditional basis. Matriculation status will be reviewed upon completion of the three courses required for matriculation.

**Candidates not holding teaching certification must take a minimum of 12 hours in education at the undergraduate or graduate level.

M.S. in Secondary Education
M.S. in Special Education & Special Education Praxis II Prep

  • Official transcripts verifying completion of an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Submit Praxis I test scores that meet MSDE minimum score requirements;
  • Develop an initial 9-credit preliminary plan in consultation with the Program Coordinator.
M.S. in TESOL & TESOL Praxis II Prep
  • Completed application for graduate study
  • Submit the non-refundable application fee
  • Submit a Statement of Intent to Teach English Language Learners
  • Official transcripts verifying completion of an undergraduate and graduate (if obtained) degree from an accredited college or university with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.75
  • Three letters of recommendation
