Celebrating Africa

December 01, 2010

Nearly 200 members of the McDaniel community joined the Friends of Africa Nov. 29 to celebrate the 50 years of independence of 27 African nations by immersing in the culture, heritage and future of the continent.

From a silent auction of donated jewelry and other African treasures to barefoot dancers swaying and stepping to village rhythms to the rich tapestries adorning guests and spicy aromas drifting from their dinner plates, the Decker Center Forum was Africa, if only for an evening.

“We want people to know Africa and to understand what it means to the many students, faculty and staff who are of African descent,” said Kwei Maduot-Parek, a junior from Sudan and head of the Friends of Africa student group. Maduot-Parek’s niece and nephew joined her in the evening’s fashion show.

Tosin Abraham ’11 donned a Nigerian dress and bright orange headdress handmade by her mother. First-year students Stephanie Akoto and Bodeshi Husen wore the white clothing with colorful woven trim typical of Ethiopia, while sophomore Ashley Dwumfuor chose an geometric patterned dress from her parents homeland in Ghana.

Proceeds from the silent auction will help fund the work of McDaniel students during two January-term service projects, “Zimbabwe: From the Ground Up” and “Kijiji: Life in African Village (Kenya).”
