Former McDaniel President honored as Good Scout
McDaniel Board Chairman and 2003 Good Scout honoree Martin K.P. Hill called Coley a “trailblazer whose skills, wisdom and experience as an educator, scholar and college president have developed learning opportunities for all in her circle of influence,” in his tribute to honor the College’s eighth president.
“Joan’s not someone who is first in line to pitch a tent, but she is always first to light a fire that will inspire learning for a lifetime,” he added.
President Emerita Coley Named Good Scout
Coley, who retired June 30, was the first member of McDaniel College’s faculty to move through the ranks to serve as the College’s CEO and President, attaining that position in 2000. During the past decade, she conceived and implemented initiatives that both strengthened student’s learning experiences and further enhanced the teaching and scholarship of the faculty. She also forged partnerships throughout the Carroll and Greater Baltimore corporate community that have engendered a better understanding of the college and garnered financial support for its programs.
Proudly sporting the Boy Scouts hat, neckerchief and walking stick, iconic gear presented each year to the honoree, Coley accepted the accolades on behalf of the entire McDaniel community naming the many roles that college staff and trustees provide on local community boards. “We have endeavored to be good scouts in the Carroll County community,” she said.
