Love This Blog for Romance Writers

January 03, 2014

Eight authors in four states and on three continents from the inaugural class of McDaniel’s Romance Writing Program have launched a blog about what it takes to make a great story.

The Blog, Eight Ladies Writing, was conceived when the group of online classmates in the Romance Writing program realized at its completion they didn’t want it to end: they wanted to keep talking, arguing, encouraging and pushing each other to make their books better.

Their instructor, Jennifer Crusie, the New York Times, USA Today and Publisher’s Weekly bestselling author of 20 novels, had been impressed with these members of the inaugural class from the start.

“I swear I learned as much from their questions as they did from my answers because they pushed me to think about things in depth, and they didn’t hesitate to say, ‘Wait a minute, what about this,’ and make me give things I was sure about a second look,” Crusie writes, touting the new Blog on her own Blog, Argh Ink. “They were so hungry for knowledge that they devoured every reading I gave them and looked for more, bringing new sources back to class. They were, in short, story wonks, and they were amazing.”

The women express their mutual regard for Crusie, and what they learned through the program, which they continue to apply in their writing. Jilly Wood, of London, England, reports that the program was everything she hoped for, with the unexpected bonus that her fellow students “turned out to be the kind of smart, supportive friends most writers dream of.”
