McDaniel community celebrates inauguration of ninth president

April 18, 2011

With the theme, “Changing Lives for a Changing World,” McDaniel College installed its ninth president, Roger N. Casey, in an inauguration ceremony at 2:30 p.m. April 16 in Gill Learning Center.

National and local dignitaries – including state Sen. Edward J. Kasemeyer ’67, Westminster City Mayor Kevin R. Utz, Phi Beta Kappa Society Secretary John Churchill and McDaniel College Alumni Association President-elect Sally F. Stanfield ’78 delivered remarks during the ceremony. Special remarks from faculty came from college librarian Jane F. Sharpe, McDaniel-Budapest Dean Lazlo Frenyo, and Richard Carpenter, professor of Exercise Science and Physical Education.

“The theme rises from Casey’s desire to celebrate contributions of McDaniel students, faculty and alumni – locally and globally – and how they have been changing and helping change lives over the years,” said Mohamed Esa, professor of German and chair of the Department of Foreign Languages.

The week starting April 9 was designated Inauguration Week – a time of celebration of McDaniel’s mission and meaningful contributions of students, faculty, staff and alumni to take charge of their lives and engage locally, nationally and globally for the common good.

Highlights of the week included a “Day of Community Service,” a gala Inauguration Concert and “American Education in the 21st Century: Achievement, Accountability and Apprehension,” a discussion forum including national and local education experts.
