McDaniel to celebrate 144th Commencement
McDaniel College will hold its 144th Commencement at 2 p.m. May 24 on campus in Gill Center with more than 600 bachelor’s and master’s degrees to be awarded. Admission to the ceremony is by ticket only.
McDaniel alumnus Alan Rabinowitz ’74, a world-renowned wildlife conservationist and one of the world’s leading big cat experts, is the commencement speaker and honorary degree recipient. Dubbed “The Indiana Jones of Wildlife Conservation” by Time magazine, he has recently written a children’s book, “A Boy and a Jaguar,” to be released May 6.
Student awards include the Argonaut Award, which is presented yearly to the graduating senior with the highest cumulative grade point average, and the Edith Farr Ridington Phi Beta Kappa Writing Award for the best honors research paper, as well as The B. Jill Brooks Hodge Professional Development Award given to a graduate student who has demonstrated academic excellence with a strong compassion for individuals with special needs and an interest in serving the deaf or disabled. Award winners are not revealed until the commencement ceremony.
Additionally, in conjunction with Commencement, several events are held on Friday, May 23.
Five graduating McDaniel seniors who are members of the Green Terror Battalion Army ROTC program will be commissioned as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army at 10 a.m. May 23 in Baker Memorial Chapel. Army ROTC has been a tradition at the college since 1919, and the Green Terror Battalion is one of the oldest ROTC programs in the nation. McDaniel has consistently been recognized among the top 15 percent of Military Friendly Schools® in the nation.
Senior Investiture and Honors Convocation is 7:30 p.m. May 23 in Gill Center. Graduating seniors receive academic, activity and leadership awards, including the Bates Prize for the most outstanding male graduating senior and Mary Ward Lewis Prize for the most outstanding female graduating senior.
