McDaniel’s Asian coalition sponsors sweet and fashionable taste of Asia

November 07, 2011

This year’s Taste of Asia sponsored by the Asian Community Coalition will come in two parts – a dessert and fashion show at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 17 and a dinner, music and dance in the spring.

The fall event in the Decker College Center Forum will showcase desserts and authentic dress from seven Asian countries: Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and India.

“We are trying to broaden our perspective of Asian cultures,” says senior Kim Trang of Wichita, Kan., president of the ACC. “Many people talk about food and language of a culture but not many people think about traditional dresses. The traditional dresses featured in the fashion show are authentic and come straight from the countries we are featuring.”

The student group is advertising the event with photos taken by senior Tiara Tirasawasdichai of Beavercreek, Ohio, and a poster created by Trang that mimics a magazine cover. With Trang, pictured at the top of the poster, are (clockwise) senior Kristen Santos of Olney, Md.; senior Priyanka Sengupta of Ellicott City, Md.; freshman Janki Jani of Westminster, Md., and sophomore Princess Dingzon of Baltimore. Visit the group’s Facebook page for more photos of club members in tradition dress.

Tickets are $7 for students, $10 for McDaniel faculty and staff, and $12 for the community and are available Nov. 7-11 in Decker College Center outside of Englar Dining Hall. For reservations, e-mail acc@mcdaniel.edu. Tickets will be sold at the door if there are any remaining seats by the evening of Nov. 17.
