President Roger N. Casey participates in prestigious TIME Summit
McDaniel College president Roger N. Casey participated in a daylong conference on “Reinventing College” in New York City on Oct. 18.
The TIME Summit on Higher Education coincided with a special higher-education edition of TIME and was co-sponsored by the Carnegie Corporation of New York and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
President Casey joined national leaders in higher education, business, government and philanthropy, as well as journalists and other college and university presidents from across the country. He was one of only a handful of small private liberal arts college presidents at the event.
Discussions centered on civic engagement and examining solutions to critical challenges facing higher education, including cost, access and success, globalization and digitalization.
Throughout the day, President Casey was active on social media sharing his takeaways from the conference. Some examples:
“Higher education is the engine of American exceptionalism.”
TIME magazine editor Rick Stengel
“Access to higher education is THE civil rights issue of our time.”
Miami Dade College president Eduardo J. Padrón
“In a post-truth era in politics, I believe the American public has a hard time hearing the truth about anything.”
Broadcast journalist Bill Moyers
President Casey remarked, “Being a participant in the TIME Summit as one of only a handful of liberal arts college presidents invited provided a great opportunity for McDaniel to be at the table for a crucial conversation among national thought leaders about the future of higher education in an age of constant change.”
In addition to the TIME Summit, President Casey met with higher education reporters at the New York Times on Oct. 8 and moderated a panel with the Ford and Carnegie Foundations in conjunction with the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC).
