Green Terror field hockey, men’s and women’s soccer and volleyball teams opened their seasons over the Labor Day weekend, with soccer and volleyball emerging from tournaments with 1-1 records.

Catholic scored a 3-1 victory over McDaniel Aug. 30 in season-opening field hockey action. Brooke Dixon (Clayton, Del./Smyrna) tallied the lone goal for the Green Terror (0-1), converting a penalty stroke at the 25:58 mark. Erika Wawzyanick (Wantage, N.J./High Point Regional), who was pelted with 14 of the 20 Catholic shots after halftime, made 13 saves, including 10 in the second half. The Green Terror opens the home and Centennial Conference slate at 1 p.m. Sept. 6 against Washington (Md.).

Shawn Weaver (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Twp.) finished a solo run Aug. 31 in the 62nd minute to lead McDaniel to a 1-0 victory over Goucher on the final day of the 2008 Goucher Soccer Classic in non-conference men’s soccer action. After being shut out for the first 150 minutes of the season, Weaver found the back of the net at the 61:24 mark to break the deadlock and give McDaniel a split in its opening weekend of action. Lebanon Valley scored a 4-0 victory over McDaniel Aug. 30 in the soccer classic. The Green Terror returns to action at 4 p.m. Sept. 3 at Stevenson.

Rachel McCallum (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick) scored both McDaniel goals in a 2-1 victory over Hood Aug. 31 in the consolation game of the Kim Servedio Tournament in non-conference women’s soccer action. Brittany Baer (Westminster, Md./Westminster) found McCallum once in each half to help the Green Terror (1-1) even its record in the young season. Mississippi College scored a 3-0 victory over McDaniel in season opening women’s soccer action on the first day of the Hood Tournament Aug. 30. Green Terror women’s soccer returns to action at 4 p.m. Sept. 3 in the home opener against St. Mary’s (Md.) on Wednesday.

Taylor Herrgott (Derwood, Md./Magruder) recorded 25 kills in two matches Aug. 30 to lead McDaniel to a 1-1 day at the York (Pa.) Quad in season-opening volleyball action. After dropping a 3-2 (18-25, 25-22, 25-23, 16-25, 15-10) decision to the host Spartans (2-0), the Green Terror (1-1) defeated Swarthmore (0-2) in four sets, 25-17, 25-21, 12-25, 25-23. Against York, Lanni Reisinger (Lemoyne, Pa./Cedar Cliff) recorded a team-high 11 kills. Herrgott notched 10 kills while Kristen Nuckles (Suffolk, Va./Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) added 25 assists and 14 digs. McDaniel returns to action at 7 p.m. Sept. 3 at Messiah.
