Students land internships and jobs at on-campus interview day
Think speed dating with a career twist. On campus one recent September afternoon, representatives of 25 companies conducted 189 interviews, 20 minutes each, with 44 McDaniel students and a few graduates – all in 3 hours and 15 minutes.
Within days, the offers for internships and jobs began coming in, and the pace continues.
Now in its sixth year, Interviewing Day is the brainchild of Susan Milstein, professor of Economics and Business Administration. Dozens of Economics, Accounting and Business students and graduates have found careers and internships during this speed-interview program with regional firms such as T. Rowe Price, McGladrey, McCormick, Carroll Hospital Center, Aerotek, BB&T and more.
“I believe that these students who are so good deserve a chance, a real chance, at getting a job, and I feel that this interviewing day does this,” said Milstein, who also started, more than 20 years ago, the college’s student-volunteer VITA program which helps low- to mid-income taxpayers file their income-tax forms.
The day, which includes a feedback session and dinner, was a homecoming of sorts for the 21 company representatives who are also McDaniel alumni.
Chris Marshall ’93 (above, interviewing senior Shannon Savoia), manager of the equity portfolio accounting department at Baltimore-based T. Rowe Price, makes a point of participating each year.
“We do recruit from a lot of colleges from New York to the Carolinas,” Marshall said. “McDaniel’s a priority for me – one because I’m an alumnus and secondly because all the people I work with at T. Rowe who are McDaniel graduates are all very stellar.”
For senior Shannon Savoia (below), interviewing day was an opportunity to fine-tune her interviewing skills and take first steps toward a post-graduation job.
Senior Shannon Savoia heads to the first of her seven interviews at the start of Interviewing Day on McDaniel's campus.
“It’s a great experience,” she said. “I don’t know anyone else who has this opportunity like us where we can go to seven interviews in one day and get offered internships and jobs.”
