Students perform in annual musical performances

Jazz Night
November 26, 2013

December is jam-packed with musical performances featuring McDaniel College students. For more information about the performances, which are free and open to the public, call 410-857-2599.

First up is Jazz Night at 8 p.m. Dec. 5 in Decker Center Forum. Jazz Night highlights the Thursday Jazz Ensemble, Monday Jazz Ensemble and the five-piece Jazz Combo with vocalists, all directed by Bo Eckard, senior lecturer in Music. Styles of jazz represented include classic Big Band swing, bebop, Latin, funk, Jazz-rock and Tin Pan Alley.

Eckard promises “a terrific concert, with music for everyone.” He says, “The students have worked extremely hard, and it should prove to be a great show.”

The College Band Concert at 7 p.m. Dec. 6 in WMC Alumni Hall features musical selections from classical to pops. Under the direction of Linda Kirkpatrick, senior lecturer in Music, the band features nearly 50 students, McDaniel alumni and faculty members, as well as community musicians.

“We will, of course, feature some holiday-oriented pieces,” Kirkpatrick says, “but this concert will also celebrate many important people throughout history, including ‘heroes’ Abraham (14th chapter of Genesis), Rosa Parks, and those who fought and served in the American Civil War. We have some wonderful music that portrays each of these individuals.”

Another highlight of the program is the world premiere of “Otto’s Flight,” which honors German aviator Otto Lilienthal. The piece was composed by McDaniel alumna Justine Koontz ’09 of Eldersburg, Md.

Linda Kirkpatrick also directs the Westminster Symphony Orchestra concert at 3 p.m. Dec. 7 in WMC Alumni Hall. The Westminster Symphony Orchestra is composed of McDaniel students, as well as community musicians, and the concert features Haydn’s Symphony No. 104 “London” and Elgar’s “Serenade for Strings.” Another highlight is Vivaldi’s “Winter Concerto.”

According to Kirkpatrick, “Vivaldi's ‘Winter Concerto’ is rarely played since the ‘Spring Concerto’ is his most popular of the ‘Four Seasons.’ We thought it appropriate to schedule for a winter concert.”

Lastly, McDaniel’s Gospel Choir Concert is 3 p.m. Dec. 8 in WMC Alumni Hall. Under the direction of Shelley Ensor, Music lecturer, the Gospel Choir performs an eclectic mix of traditional, contemporary and “out of the box” gospel music, featuring musical arrangements ranging from Kirk Franklin and Donnie Harper to Earth, Wind & Fire and John Lennon.

Ensor says “the concert will showcase the diversity of gospel music and its relevance in today’s music culture.”
