Students thank donors for their help in affording McDaniel

April 27, 2010

Nearly 130 scholarship donors and guests gathered April 18 for the annual luncheon where students personally thanked their benefactors. Since last year, 13 new scholarships have been established.

“Our mission to keep McDaniel accessible and affordable to all deserving students has always depended on the generosity of our donors,” said President Joan Develin Coley.  “Today, your gifts – and the gifts of other alumni and friends – are even more vital as we strive to help our students overcome economic challenges.”

Several students shared personal stories on receiving scholarship assistance including Aaron Slaughter, captain of the football team and student volunteer for the VITA program.

"Coming from a single-parent household, going to college was something that I could only dream about, but the selfless people in this room make dreams come true for students like me everyday," Slaughter said. "It is very important for me to pay homage to all those who made it possible for me to be here. I do this so that one day I, too, can sit in these very seats, and give some deserving kid a fighting chance."

During the past academic year, $1.8 million from endowed scholarship funds contributed to the $23.7 million in academic scholarships and need-based aid that helped support the education of 90 percent of McDaniel’s students.
