About Bryn Upton

Professor of History Bryn Upton specializes in modern U.S. history (1865-2000s) and teaches courses on such topics as presidential scandals, the conservative movement, the Cold War and Civil Rights. His 2014 book, "Hollywood and the End of the Cold War: Signs of Cinematic Change," looks at how the end of the Cold War changed popular films. Upton designs innovative courses like "Greed, Gangsters and the Great Depression: The United States 1898-1940" and "Bourne at the Right Time: Film and Our Post-Cold War Identity."

His popular Jan Term course, "Presidential Scandals," looks at events that have rocked the White House in the past 200 years, like Watergate, the Clinton-Lewinsky affair and questions surrounding President Obama’s citizenship. He frequently presents research papers at academic conferences, speaks to the community and media about issues relating to history and politics and serves as a moderator at events featuring notable authors. He has published several articles and review essays in scholarly journals and serves as a junior editor for "Proto: An Undergraduate Humanities Journal." Among his many professional affiliations, he is a member of The Society for U.S. Intellectual History, the American Historical Association, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History and Phi Alpha Theta, the national history honor society.

Upton, who is also the director of the McDaniel Honors Program, received a bachelor’s degree in History from Bowdoin College and a Ph.D. in American History from Brandeis University. He received the McDaniel College Distinguished Scholars Award in 2008 and 2013. A former assistant track coach and a performer-composer with the McDaniel College Electric Bass Ensemble, he clocks many miles each day while writing at his self-designed treadmill desk in his Hill Hall office.
