Take me out to the ballgame

Baseball nonfiction course offers new perspective on America’s sport

Americana through
The lens of baseball

Beyond the peanuts and Cracker Jacks, the old ballgame will never again be quite the same for the students in Daniel Schafer’s “Baseball Nonfiction” class.

Forget the play by play, the crack of the bat hitting the ball – even the long, slow call of “Ssttrrrrriiiiiiiikke!” – baseball has given these students a peephole into Americana. And they are relishing every minute.

“I would like them to develop an appreciation for reading and writing,” says Schafer. “Beyond that I want them to see how a story can be rich and complex and different for everyone observing the same event.”

Preserving the Planet

Green Life club members put action behind their words

Ultimately, the goal is for members, individually or in groups of two or three, to lead a project that will help preserve, conserve or sustain the environment.
