Hawaii through the lens

It was an extraordinary day for whale watching in the Pacific. As the majestic animals breached the water, 25 McDaniel students snapped pictures.

From wildlife to black-sand beaches and an abundance of flowers and fruits, students in the course "Hawaii Through the Lens" had a lot at which to look.

"We went horseback riding up a trail on the side of a mountain that overlooked black-sand beaches, and then reached a place where we could swim in a waterfall," says Kara Daly '09.

The students visited four islands and were assigned several photography projects, including a personal theme of their choosing. Their work will be shown March 3-10 at an exhibit in Decker Hall's Ensor Lounge.

"It's not just a vacation," says Art and Art History Professor Sue Bloom. "Anytime you go away and there's a lot to learn, you get a new perspective and appreciation of the place, its culture and people."
