Viva Mexico

"I don't think there's any other way to visit a new country without seeing firsthand how its people live," says Rachel Goonan '08.
She and 10 other students had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the Spanish language as part of the "Viva Mexico" tour, led by Foreign Languages Professor Tom Deveny.
For hours each day, students took intense language classes at the Olé Spanish Language School in Querétaro, Mexico. The city of about 1-million inhabitants is located three hours north of Mexico City.
"The professor, Alberto, was very entertaining," said Timmy Neeson '08. "He encouraged us to respond spontaneously which was good, because you need to respond that way in real-life conversations."
In the afternoon, they attended cultural events, including cooking classes and a walking tour through the colonial city center, which UNESCO has declared a World Heritage Site. Students even stayed with local families. |

"I had the opportunity to see how my family operated and to build relationships with them," says Goonan. "My family was very gracious."
On weekend field trips, students visited surrounding villages and the city of Guanajuato. The trip ended with a visit to Mexico City and to the archeological site of Teotihuacán, one of the largest cities in the world before its demise around 700 CE.
