Chamber Music on the Hill presents Lyric Brass
March 21, 2005
Chamber Music on the Hill, in residence at McDaniel College, presents The Lyric Brass Quintet at 7 p.m. April 3 at the Carroll Arts Center.
Tickets are $15 for adults and $8 for seniors. Students with valid ID are admitted free. Tickets will be available at the door before the concert. For more information, call 410-857-2599.
Formed in 1998, The Lyric Brass Quintet (Elisa Koehler and Kevin Dines, trumpets; Larry Williams, horn; Brandon Rivera, trombone; and Andrew Spang, tuba) quickly distinguished itself as one of the premier brass chamber groups in the region. As winners of the 2000 Baltimore Chamber Music Competition they performed at Baltimore's ARTSCAPE, and their debut CD, "Desires and Diversions" was released the same year to critical acclaim.
They have been featured artists on the Baltimore Composer's Forum, the Peggy and Yale Gordon Trust Concert Series, and at the Foxboro Orpheum in Boston. They have appeared as soloists in Eric Ewazen's concerto grosso, Shadowcatcher, with the Peabody Wind Ensemble and were featured artists on Virginia's Catch a Rising Star Concert Series.
LBQ is sponsored, in part, by Stu's Music Shop in Westminster, Md., and have served as artists in residence at the Goucher Summer Arts Institute. LBQ's second recording, "Christmas Around the World," was released in December 2002.
The program, "A Touch of Brass" (Short Masterworks for Brass), opens with two original arrangements by quintet member Andrew Spang: Prelude to "Te Deum" (Charpentier/Spang) and “Prelude and Fugue in C Major” (Bach/Spang).
Also on the program are “Interlude from Crossing Brooklyn Ferry” by Elam Ray Sprenkle, “Morning Music” by David Sampson, “Canzona Bergamasca” by Scheidt/De Jong, “Quintet” (“Tribute”) by Kamen, “Dance” by Wilke Renwick, and “Colchester Fantasy” (I. The Rose and Crown, II. The Marquis of Granby, III. The Dragoon, IV. The Red Lion) by Ewazen.
