Students spend spring break helping in Katrina recovery

During spring break, eight McDaniel students traveled to Alabama and Mississippi to aid in the Katrina Recovery effort through a program called “Katrina on the Ground.” Along with about 1,000 other students from colleges and universities across the country, they cleaned and repaired damaged homes, schools, yards and churches throughout the devastated region.

Students tackle the mess. "I was pleased they decided this was something they cared enough about to organize an effort," says Bryant. "They're taking the time they could be spending with families to help another community, and it says a lot about them."

Floodwater did more than destroy the homes – it ruined the ground around them. Here, students clear debris from a yard.

"Chunks of buildings were gone. Only the big trees are still standing," says Veronica Armstrong '06.

Inside some damaged homes, students knocked down walls, put up insulation and drywall and painted. Many wore face masks because of potential mold conditions.

The inside of this elementary school was heavily damaged.
