Howard earns All-American honors, spring athletes shake off the snow

McDaniel CollegeTony Howard ’06 (right) may have lost his bid to become an NCAA Division III Champion, but the 165-pound wrestler did earn All-American honors for the second straight year for his efforts this winter. He is the sixth McDaniel wrestler to receive All-American status, and the second to do so twice.

Green Terror women’s basketball wrapped March 3 its season in the ECAC Semifinals with a 60-67 loss to Pitt-Greensburg. Kristy Costa ’06 led the team with 18 points and nine rebounds, while Amy Watson ’07 pitched in eight points and 10 rebounds. The squad finished 20-9, 12-6 in conference.

McDaniel indoor track captured Feb. 25-26 a few medals at the Centennial Conference Championships at Ursinus College. Broderick Maybank ’06 and Scott Koleszar ’07 brought home gold in the triple jump and 400-meter dash, respectively. Maybank also took silver in the long jump, and Koleszar, with teammates Adam Safely ’08, Stuart Johnson ’06 and Nick Wilbur ’08, grabbed bronze in the 4x200-meter and 4x400-meter relays. Kristin Duling ’09 also won a bronze in the 400-meter dash.

Green Terror indoor track failed March 3-4 to place in the ECAC Championships, but head March 10-11 to the NCAA Division III Championships at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn.

McDaniel swimming also travels March 9-11 to Minnesota for the NCAA Division III Championships in Minneapolis.

The first week of March ushered in the spring sports season for McDaniel athletes, as baseball, softball and men’s lacrosse have already tangled in early matches.

Green Terror baseball kicked off with three wins and one loss. The team defeated March 1 Villa Julie 6-5 and split March 4 and 5 a series with Scranton, winning 6-1 and 7-0 and losing 5-6. Tom Wenrich ’07 led McDaniel, pitching a one-hit shutout against Scranton.

McDaniel baseball heads March 11 to the Greater Phoenix Invitational in Arizona for spring break, taking on Wisconsin Lutheran.

McDaniel CollegeGreen Terror softball opened up March 3 and 4 with four losses in Virginia Beach, Va. The team faltered against North Carolina Wesleyan 0-9, Virginia Wesleyan 2-3, Lynchburg 4-16 and Rowan 5-8.

McDaniel softball moves on March 13 to the Rebel Games in Kissimmee, Fla., against Denison.

Men’s lacrosse started its season at .500, with a 14-2 victory over Marymount Mar. 1, and an 8-9 double overtime loss to Wooster March 4. Recording goals for the Green Terror against Wooster were Matt Buschman ’08 (2), Jared Nutter ’07 (4), Brad Baer ’07 (1) and Kolyn Kirby ’08 (1).

Several Green Terror teams have yet to begin spring campaigns:
• Women’s lacrosse heads March 8 to Grantham, Pa., to face Messiah;
• Men’s and women’s golf begin March 11 spring break competition in Myrtle Beach, S.C.;
• Men’s and women’s tennis travel March 11 to Ashland, Va., for matches versus Randolph-Macon and Guilford; and
• Outdoor track starts March 24-25 at the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, N.C.
