Most of Bergman’s kinetic sculptures come to life when the visitor uses hand cranks to activate them. His creations, made with steel, wood, electric motors and other elements examine concepts like balance, time, gravity and air pressure.
“I’m a student of physics and mechanics and electronics,” Bergman says. “My machines tell a story or express something that happened to me.”
Bergman, a sculpture technician at the College of Saint Rose in Albany, N.Y., earned his Master of Fine Arts degree in sculpture from Alfred University. He is the 2005 winner of the Purchase Award from the Albany Institute of History and Art. Bergman’s sculptures have been displayed along the East Coast and as far away as Hawaii.
