McDaniel CollegeChallenges, delights of summer internships and jobs
Megan Kingston ’07
McDaniel College students are encouraged to learn about subjects that inspire them through internships and jobs during the summer months. By the time they graduate, 46 percent of students have held an internship. Read about three students taking advantage of jobs and competitive internships in such diverse fields as historic conservation, national security and public relations with the Baltimore Ravens.

Andy Cummings

McDaniel CollegeIn what forecasters called the hottest week of the year, Andy Cummings ’07 and four other college students mowed 20 acres of land on an overgrown Eastern Shore horse farm. They cleared overgrowth from an ancient stable and repaired a gatehouse.

“The heat is the worst, but you can’t complain because we’re out on the Chesapeake and we’re elbow to elbow with the old watermen,” the Political Science/International Studies major says. “We go crabbing with them and hear their stories.”

While on weeklong conservation projects with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Cummings and his team have camped out along the shore and on the decks of boats, rolling out their sleeping bags and staring at the stars on clear nights.

The Woodbine, Md., native is one of many taking advantage of the summer months to earn valuable work experience at a job or internship.

Allison Biggs

McDaniel CollegeAllison Biggs ’07 is one of the nearly half of McDaniel students who hold an internship before they graduate, but she can’t describe the details of her work. She tests computer programs for Lockheed Martin, in a job that requires security clearance. The Math major earned the position through a prestigious Independent College Fund scholarship, awarded annually to up to 20 private college students in Maryland.

“My math and computer science courses at McDaniel gave me a very good background to do this work because they taught me to think in a certain way, and I use that on the job” says Biggs. “I’m so happy I got the opportunity to do this because it’s a really good experience.”

The feeling is mutual for Lockheed Martin, as the company has offered her a permanent job upon graduation.

Megan Kingston

McDaniel CollegeMegan Kingston ’07 says she also has the perfect summer internship – with the Baltimore Ravens. The Business Administration major beat hundreds of applicants to become one of eight selected interns for the training camp program. Alex Katcoff ’07 also won a position, and Adam Weaver ’06 holds a separate paid internship with the team that will last all season.

“This is exactly what I want to be doing,” Kingston says. “It is very hands-on. I like interacting with people, not sitting behind a desk.”

At 6:45 a.m. every morning of training camp, Kingston sets up tents in the fan area and the autograph section. Later in the day, she runs the Ravens rookie area for kids and the information booth. Kingston makes sure the kids and the players are happy and having fun.

The job lines up perfectly with the Pasadena native’s goals for the future: she’s hoping to land a marketing job at NFL headquarters.
