Members of the class of 2010 spend their free time volunteering, listening to heavy metal music, playing paintball and practicing martial arts, among other hobbies. The College’s 482 first-year students and 72 transfer students come from 22 states and Washington D.C., and as far away as Hungary, Myanmar and Zambia.

They moved August 23 onto the Hill.

“I can’t wait to meet all the first-year students I’ve been talking to over the phone,” says Sarah Stokely, dean of first-year students who joins the College this fall. “The incoming class is very involved in their respective communities. Their honor, discipline and sense of serving something other than themselves are what McDaniel is all about.”

These first-year students (freshmen) were born in 1988, the year disposable contact lenses went on sale, CDs outsold vinyl for the first time, and the children’s TV show Barney was released.

Among the class of 2010 are two sets of twins, 16 children of alumni, 26 siblings of alumni and two grandchildren of alumni. The incoming class includes 30 Honors Program participants with an average GPA of 3.95 and combined SAT score of 1367. About 54 percent of the incoming class is female; 14 percent are minority. Their diverse academic interests include Biology, Chemistry, Communication, Education, Foreign Languages, International Relations, Mathematics, Music and Theatre.

The College’s newest students are active in sports such as football, lacrosse and soccer. Some say they’ll join the track and swim teams, while others want to start their own badminton club.
