Romance on the Hill

Everyone knows that McDaniel offers an extraordinary education in the liberal arts and sciences, professors who are mentors, classes that average only 17 students, leadership opportunities and cultural activities.

But romance? Who would have thought?

Yet some 2,882 alumni found the loves of their lives here on the Hill. That's right – McDaniel College boasts some 1,441 married alumni couples, marriages in which both partners are graduates of the College.

Romance was in the air on Feb. 12 when 35 couples – most of the 70 people were alumni – came back for a Valentine's Dinner on the Hill. McDaniel Lounge was transformed into an elegant dining room complete with red and white linens, candles, ruby red roses and champagne.

Musical mystery spoof on McDaniel stage

The audience will hear nothing but British accents – including cockney – when McDaniel College Theatre presents "Something's Afoot" at 8 p.m. March 2, 3, 4, and 5 on the Mainstage in WMC Alumni Hall. The 10 students in the cast have been coached by Assistant Professor Elizabeth van den Berg in the dialects of the British Isles in preparation for the production.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for the McDaniel Community (faculty, staff, students), Seniors (65+) and students (any school) with ID. For more information, call the box office at 410-857-2448.

The production – book, music and lyrics by James McDonald, David Vos and Robert Gerlach with additional music by Ed Linderman – is a musical spoof of the whodunit genre. It takes a strong satirical poke at Agatha Christie murder mysteries, most notably "Ten Little Indians," as well as at many musical styles of the past.

Eight explore India

Because McDaniel believes in discussion-centered, active learning, classes are small and professors often use innovative approaches and hands-on experiences to keep their classes lively and interesting.

For eight students traveling with former Fulbright scholar Greg Alles during a January Term trip to India, things never got boring. In fact, "the whole trip was amazing," said psychology and sociology dual major Diego de los Rios. Diego had taken many classes with Alles, a professor of religious studies, and was eager to go to India with him as a guide.

"I think about the crowded streets, the friendly people and the temples—especially a Jain temple we visited in a small town. It was carved in white marble and was one of the most amazing things I've seen in my life," said Diego.

Lindsay Stewart and
Chris DeRose re-enact their performance at the American College Theatre Festival.
McDaniel senior earns spot in acting finals

Lindsay Stewart couldn't be much more ecstatic. The Theatre major placed in the top 16 of about 250 college students invited to compete in early January for the Irene Ryan Acting Scholarship Award at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival regional competition at Muhlenberg College.

It is the first time a McDaniel student has placed in the competition finals, according to Assistant Professor Elizabeth van den Berg.

"She was on Cloud 9," van den Berg said of Lindsay. "She has been in my acting classes since she was a freshman. I'm proud of her and I'm proud of our department in terms of how we're able to help actors grow."

Students study British theatre firsthand

The 15 students who spent Jan Term with Theatre Professor Ira Domser experienced theatre and culture different from their own. They may have been fairly familiar with the language but found British theatre and the southern England culture far removed from what they know in the U.S.

The group saw eight shows in London and traveled throughout southern England. The British view theatre differently than American do, Carrie said. Even students are likely to find a way to afford going to a show.
