McDaniel Relay for Life nearly doubles goal
It took David Martin more than seven years to grow his
14-inch ponytail – and My Hair Salon owner Nick Fonti less
than a minute to cut it off.
The audience gathered in the American Cancer Society's Relay
for Life survivor tent to watch Martin fulfill his promise
to McDaniel students in Eye to Eye. The group raised $841
for ACS, nearly tripling Martin's $300 challenge.
The American Sign Language studies instructor grimaced, and
then grinned, as onlookers gasped, cheered and applauded ASL-style
with hands waving high over their heads.
The haircutting was only one in a series of McDaniel Relay for
Life events held on campus May 6-7, which raised more than $17,500
for the American Cancer Society. More than 300 students, friends
and family participated and organized 25 teams for the event.
“It was really, really amazing,” said Lori Evans, income manager for
ACS. The event by far surpassed the hopes of its all-student committee,
organized by Suzanne Gilbert '06, for 10 teams and $10,000, Evans said.

Professor and student co-author
case study about drug war
Volker Franke doesn't expect to see “Terrorism and Peacekeeping”
on the New York Times bestseller list. The associate professor of
Political Science and International Studies and one of his students
wrote one of the chapters, and Franke edited the nearly
300-page compilation of national security case studies.
The book, Franke's third, will certainly be used to prepare and
rehearse officials, policymakers and students in varied areas
concerning national security. Professors may use it for class
discussions in conflict resolution and terrorism.
But Franke sees its greatest value with the high-level military
and civilian participants in programs such as the National Security
Studies based at Syracuse University, where he directs the case-study
program that provides training and practice to officials in whose
hands U.S. security rests.
Justin Reed '03 co-authored the chapter “Squeezing the Balloon:
Plan Colombia and America 's War on Drugs.” Reed worked closely
with Franke during his four years at McDaniel, and the case study
began as Reed's honors thesis.

Student documentaries teach lessons of tolerance
Dressed in black t-shirts imprinted with the words “Docs Gone Wild,”
students from the advanced documentary production class premiered
their digital films in Decker Auditorium May 5.
Screenings of original documentary shorts were as follows:
-
"Anatomy of a Prayer," a look at students' spiritual journeys
by Michael Chittenden, David Nasongkhla, and Maggie Ross,
-
"Music into Montage," music videos featuring original compositions
by Kirsten Wilf,
-
"Powering the Airwaves," job-hunting as a radio DJ, by Emica
Boutilier, Scott Koleszar, and Greg Wagner,
-
"Townies," a snapshot of local residents, Nick Hall, Greg Raeder
and Marcia Robusto, and
-
"Paprika," Hungarian student life in Westminster, by Molly Koch,
Brigid Seay, and Ashley Swift.
Jonathan Slade who teaches the class was surprised to discover
that tolerance emerged as an unexpected theme in all the student
documentaries. "Student filmmakers often start out with a concept
proving something they believe in, but in the process of their work,
stumbled into new ways of seeing their subjects."
