Freshmen to explore multiculturalism through 'Kite Runner'

McDaniel's incoming freshmen are sure to have at least one thing in common. They all will have read "The Kite Runner" – the tender tale of two motherless boys coming of age in an Afghanistan on the brink of the Soviet invasion and downfall.

First-time novelist Khaled Hosseini weaves themes of friendship, betrayal, forgiveness, hatred, love and redemption into this story set against the backdrop of Kabul before and after the Soviets and the Taliban. It offers students a rich variety of topics for discussion during orientation and throughout their first semester on campus.

"('Kite Runner') raises the issues of multicultural understanding and awareness," says Sherri Lind Hughes, Associate Dean of Academic Affairs. "It is connected to current events and addresses life changes and transition."

Godspell: The musical that changes lives

Audience members are dancing in their seats to the Theatre on the Hill (TOTH) production of the rock opera "Godspell." The show takes place on the main stage of WMC Alumni Hall with an elaborate set and 10 comical characters dramatically moving through song, dance and storytelling. Featuring the international ballad "Day by Day" and several other musical numbers, "Godspell" promises to deliver a burst of energy and excitement.

Tickets to the show are $19, with show times at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 24 and 25, and July 1, 2, 8 and 9. Seating is reserved. For more information, call the box office at 410-857-2448.

"It's based on the best seller of all time: the Bible," said Ira Domser, co-founder of TOTH and company producer. "Godspell is always a popular play." The production, with book by John Michael Tebelek as well as music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, is a classic 1970s musical retelling a dozen of Christ's best-known parables.
