Freshmen to explore multiculturalism through 'Kite Runner'
McDaniel's incoming freshmen are sure to have at least one
thing in common. They all will have read "The Kite Runner" – the
tender tale of two motherless boys coming of age in an Afghanistan on
the brink of the Soviet invasion and downfall.
First-time novelist Khaled Hosseini weaves themes of friendship,
betrayal, forgiveness, hatred, love and redemption into this story
set against the backdrop of Kabul before and after the Soviets and
the Taliban. It offers students a rich variety of topics for discussion
during orientation and throughout their first semester on campus.
"('Kite Runner') raises the issues of multicultural understanding
and awareness," says Sherri Lind Hughes, Associate Dean of Academic
Affairs. "It is connected to current events and addresses life changes
and transition."
