Strategies for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at McDaniel

Since mid-June, members of our Board of Trustees have been working with the senior administration to develop a leadership structure to enable meaningful institutional progress around issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion. For several years now, the administration and board have focused on diversity as a key pillar to strengthen the future of the College; and this year, diversity, equity and inclusion were the prime subjects of our February trustee meeting. Following discussions among institutional leadership and with numerous alumni, the board and administration have proposed a structure of three leadership groups to guide McDaniel’s strategy for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI).

  • At the trustee level, a DEI Taskforce will be led by trustee Patrick Stokes ’90, who graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Biology before earning his MBA from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School Business. Honored as a “New Face of Business Executives” by Black Enterprise Magazine and among the “Top 50 Under 50” by Black MBA Magazine, Stokes has extensive experience in the telecommunications industry.
  • He will be joined by the leadership of the Academic and Campus Life Committee, trustee alumni Barbara Thomas ’70 and Victor McTeer ’69; and six other members of the Board, including Young Alumni Visitor Aaron Slaughter ’10; President of the Alumni Council Chuck Sullivan ’72; and former Board Chair Marty Hill.
  • DEI Administrative team is a ten-member group composed of key campus leadership. Chaired by the Provost, the group includes the President, Vice President for Enrollment, Associate Vice President for Alumni and Admissions, Associate Vice President of Administration, Dean of Students, Director of the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, Chair of the Faculty Diversity and Inclusion Committee, Special Advisor to the Provost on Diversity Initiatives, and the Chief of Staff.
  • DEI Advisory Board of alumni, faculty, and staff, primarily composed of persons of color, will serve as a sounding board, as idea generators, and as speakers of truth to power, both drawing on their lived experience as members of our community but also their visions for what this community can and should be. Over 50 nominations were received for this board and the DEI trustee Taskforce will meet this week to select ultimate membership and size for this entity, and its work will begin immediately thereafter.

More details about the specific charges to each group will be forthcoming soon, once the groups have a chance to discuss and agree to the draft proposal coming from the Board of Trustees.

In addition, the College is in the process of creating a student leadership group focused on campus diversity, which will directly interface with the Board of Trustees.
