Special Welcome Message from our 10th President, Dr. Julia Jasken

Lt. Gen. (Ret.) Otto J. Guenther '63, chair of the McDaniel College Board of Trustees, introduces Dr. Julia Jasken, who delivers a special message to students, alumni, faculty, staff, parents, and the community, as she becomes McDaniel College’s 10th president on June 1, 2021. Dr. Jasken has dedicated nearly her entire professional life to higher education and most notably to McDaniel, beginning in the classroom in 2003 as an English professor. Over her tenure at McDaniel, Dr. Jasken has assumed increasing responsibility in administrative positions, including serving as the college’s executive vice president and provost.

Messages to the Community

  • A Message from President Jasken

I am pleased to share the news that the McDaniel College Board of Trustees has elected alumnus Bruce H. Preston '75 to serve as board chair, following the passing of Otto J. Guenther. Bruce has been an active member of the McDaniel community since graduation and has served as a member of the college’s Board of Trustees since 1995. I look forward to the opportunity to work with him in this new capacity.
  • Important message from President Jasken

I am deeply saddened to inform you of the tragic loss of a member of our McDaniel family, first-year student Dillan Krebs. We offer our deepest condolences to Dillan’s family, friends and loved ones. Dillan began attending McDaniel this fall and planned to study in our accounting economics program. Details surrounding Dillan’s death are still being determined. This type of tragedy affects all of us. We will keep the campus informed as more information becomes available.
  • Nominations for Commencement Speakers

Beginning this year, we are inviting our campus community to nominate the Commencement speaker in hopes that this will continue as a yearly practice of the college. Students, faculty, staff, alumni, and trustees may all participate in this nomination process, although suggestions must be received by November 15 in order to be considered for the upcoming ceremony. The final selection will be made by the college’s leadership.
  • Otto J. Guenther '63, Board Chair, passes away

It is with deep sadness that I share the news that our courageous Board Chair, Otto J. Guenther, passed away on October 13 at the age of 80. Otto’s servant leadership has left an indelible mark on this institution and everyone who had the honor of knowing him. As we mourn the loss of this incredible leader and friend, may we always remember his strong character, warm personality, and the excellent example he set of how to lead a life well lived. Our thoughts are with his wife, Jan, and the entire family at this difficult time. A special remembrance in honor of Otto is being planned for Homecoming this weekend and a celebration of life is being planned for November 15. Additional arrangements will be shared once they become available.
  • Update on summer/spring DEI efforts

We are now at a point of transitioning into our next phase of DEI work over the coming year. The goals for this next evolution are as follows: To embed diversity efforts more visibly and intentionally into the governance and decision-making structures at all levels—at the level of the board, the alumni, the faculty, the staff, and students; To establish systems that ensure transparency and accountability; To create DEI systems of support and advocacy that are both understandable and visible to all members of the campus community in ways that enable all to engage in the ongoing work involved in becoming a more actively anti-racist institution.
  • A Message from President Jasken in Memory of September 11

While I recognize that many of our undergraduate students were not even born in 2001 or were too young then to have their own memories of this day, there is no denying that this singular event has had a lasting effect on our country. It is a day for us to remember those who were lost; it is a day for us to all come together, just as we did on that fateful day, uniting in the values that we hold dear as stated in our First Principles.
  • CSA Notice Fall 2021

Federal legislation known as the Clery Act requires that certain employees be considered "Campus Security Authorities" (CSAs), mandating them to report campus crime statistics. The Office of Human Resources and the Department of Campus Safety have identified those employees and each has received notice. However, all employees of McDaniel College, regardless of whether or not they have been formally identified as CSAs, have a duty and responsibility to immediately report crimes to the Department of Campus Safety. Thank you for your assistance as we continue Working Together for a Safe Campus.
  • A Message from President Jasken regarding Juneteenth

This Friday, June 18, the college will be closed in observance of Juneteenth (June 19). This is a day of celebration and reflection in commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States. I encourage you to learn more about the history of Juneteenth and use this day as an opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of Black Americans, while continuing to work toward justice and lasting change.
  • A message from President Jasken

It was wonderful to see so many of you back on campus in person, and I look forward to connecting with many more of you in the weeks and months ahead. In my time at McDaniel, but especially in the last year, I have witnessed our collective commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and justice. Even in the face of hate, we are unwavering in these values and will continue our work toward becoming a more just and equitable campus.

It is an incredible honor to begin my first day as McDaniel College’s 10th President. I am humbled to join a distinguished line of presidents who have so capably led our beloved college, and today I am excited to begin this next chapter with all of you.
  • For Our Community: A message from McDaniel's tenth president, Dr. Julia Jasken

I can think of no greater honor than to be selected as McDaniel’s tenth president and would like to thank the campus community for their engagement throughout the process, the search committee for their careful evaluation, and the Board of Trustees for their final determination.
