Sophomore Elva Joya seizes every opportunity to explore a future in medicine from her double major in Biomedical Sciences and Psychology to her internship in Spain shadowing surgeons and learning about the country’s free public healthcare system.
Supported by U.S. Department of State Gilman scholarships, Emem Akpan and Faith Young are studying abroad at McDaniel Europe, the college’s branch campus in Budapest, during spring semester and Priscilla Owusu heads to Dijon, France, in the summer to learn more about French culture and become more fluent in the language.
Jade Enright, a senior Molecular Biology major with a strong Chemistry minor, conducted research at Yale University after being named an Amgen Scholar. Enright worked in a graduate molecular biology lab overseen by a Yale professor and staffed with four post-doctoral fellows, four Ph.D. students and a lab manager.
Meghan Carlton Phillips, ’08 has been awarded $25,000 for her flash fiction creative writing, as a recipient of a 2020 National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Creative Writing Fellowship in prose.
Like many science majors, Cooper Hostetler wants to make the world a better place through technology. But the McDaniel senior Molecular Biology major’s focus isn’t medicine or engineering or even video game design. Instead he imagines fields of green — literally — producing super food for animals and people.
Shelton Wilson's strong sense of logic and puzzle solving skills paid off when the senior Computer Science major was one of only 100 finalists among 13,000 contenders to solve nearly 300 cybersecurity challenges and win a $22,000 Cyber FastTrack scholarship.
Jasmin Chavez '19 brought a League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) chapter to McDaniel and says it has been one of the most transformative experiences of her life. Having the opportunity to empower council members so that they can serve as advocates in their respective communities has transformed the way she views leadership.
Atticus Rice crossed the country from Portland, Oregon, to major in Communication and Political Science with a specialization in American Politics and Law. As co-editor-in-chief of the McDaniel Free Press, he worked with a team to increase the number of print issues and overhaul organizational policies and structure to help achieve the goal of delivering the news the McDaniel community deserves to know.
A few short weeks after being named the League of United Latin American Citizens’ (LULAC) National Woman of the Year, senior Jasmin Chavez received a Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship to study Spanish literature at the Benito Juárez Autonomous University of Oaxaca in Mexico.
