Response to requests about Campus Diversity Efforts

In response to requests from students and alumni, we’d like to share more about efforts taken over the past two years by our campus. Although the College has taken steps to address matters of equity, inclusion, and diversity, we recognize that our work is ongoing. Share your questions and recommendations with us via email at diversity@mcdaniel.edu.

As stated in President Casey's letter, sent to our campus community on Saturday (May 30):

“The fundamental principles of a liberal education and the fundamental First Principles guiding the McDaniel community run absolutely counter to those of racial injustice and discrimination. Our values demand that we call out such injustices, whether they occur in our backyard or in Minnesota, Georgia, or New York. At McDaniel, we cannot and will not tolerate prejudice, bias, or discrimination.”

In response to requests from students and alumni, we’d like to share more about efforts taken over the past two years by our campus. Please visit our Diversity and Inclusion webpage, which has been updated to include:

A response to student requests for additional information related to campus safety;
Our Faculty and Staff Recruitment and Retention Plan, developed as part of our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Initiatives;
A summary of diversity-related trainings and Office of Diversity and Inclusion (ODI) work over the past two academic years.

Although the College has taken steps to address matters of equity, inclusion, and diversity, we recognize that our work is ongoing. College leadership is currently seeking guidance on how to engage our campus community, especially our Black and Brown students and alumni, in ways that respect the fact that developing an anti-racist campus is not the work of our Black and Brown community members. McDaniel remains committed to supporting all our students from marginalized communities, but especially our Black and Brown students.
