November 12, 2013

McDaniel College presents the annual holiday College Choir Concert at 7 p.m. Nov. 24 in Baker Memorial Chapel with McDaniel’s 57th annual tree-lighting ceremony following the concert.

The McDaniel College Choir presents “A Choral Banquet” under the direction of Margaret Boudreaux, professor and department chair of the Music department, with David Kreider serving as accompanist. In addition to music from all over the world, the concert features several familiar carols during which audience participation is encouraged.

A highlight of the program is the world premiere of “Hymn to the Belly (Alte Clamat Epicurus),” composed by McDaniel alumna Justine Koontz ’09 of Eldersburg, Md.

“Since this program takes place the weekend before Thanksgiving, we are presenting a focus on the joys of ‘gathering together’ for a joyful feast,” Boudreaux said. “Themes include food, of course, and also the longings for family and community that are the reasons we set time aside for such feasts throughout the year.”

Boudreaux noted the variety of music in the concert.

“On one end of the spectrum, we have a splendid baroque setting by Pachelbel of the Thanksgiving hymn ‘Nun danket alle Gott (Now thank we all our God),’ complete with brass ensemble. On the other end, we'll present the more ‘down to earth’ look at feasting by P.D.Q. Bach in the choral movements from ‘The Seasonings’ with slide whistles and kazoos. In between, we have both serious and satirical settings by Palestrina, Mendelssohn and contemporary composers such as Ysaye Barnwell, John Rutter, Eric Whitacre and others.”

Members of the choir include senior Masha Paul of Providence, R.I.; and juniors Matthew Butt of Marriottsville, Md.; Matthew Gee of Millsboro, Del.; Jessica Hare of Marriottsville, Md.; Kent Hu of Providence, R.I.; Foster McDaniel of Hendersonville, Tenn., and Erin Morris of Crofton, Md.
