CSA Notice Fall 2021

Federal legislation known as the Clery Act requires that certain employees be considered "Campus Security Authorities" (CSAs), mandating them to report campus crime statistics. The Office of Human Resources and the Department of Campus Safety have identified those employees and each has received notice. However, all employees of McDaniel College, regardless of whether or not they have been formally identified as CSAs, have a duty and responsibility to immediately report crimes to the Department of Campus Safety. Thank you for your assistance as we continue Working Together for a Safe Campus.

Dear Faculty and Staff:

Federal legislation known as the Clery Act requires that certain employees be considered "Campus Security Authorities" (CSAs), mandating them to report campus crime statistics. The Office of Human Resources and the Department of Campus Safety have identified those employees and each has received notice.

However, all employees of McDaniel College, regardless of whether or not they have been formally identified as CSAs, have a duty and responsibility to immediately report crimes to the Department of Campus Safety in order to support crime prevention efforts, to promote a maximum level of service to crime victims, to maintain the highest quality of investigations, and to ensure the truest assessment of crime on campus. This reporting must include crimes that take place on the main campus, on non-campus properties owned or operated by McDaniel College, as well as at events where the College or an organization sanctioned by the College is in control of the facility at the time of the crime. Some examples of these include classes taught in satellite locations, Jan Term trips both domestic and abroad, and certain types of field trips defined by the federal regulation.

The regulatory requirements are complex, and it is important that the Department of Campus Safety review the circumstances to ensure compliance. In addition to mandated reporting, this practice makes good sense because it allows us to promptly investigate crimes, quickly make the community aware of dangerous situations, and assess how best to improve security practices, thereby reducing the likelihood of future occurrences of similar crimes. McDaniel College is a safe campus. The statistics prove that our colleges and universities are far safer than society at large. This is due to the efforts of campus communities like ours where members look out for each other. Nevertheless, college and university campuses are not immune from crime. Please join me in helping the Department of Campus Safety improve security on our campus and maintain low levels of crime by reporting crimes as soon as possible.

Additionally, federal law includes the recording of fires on campus, and the disclosure of these statistics to the campus community. Therefore, please report any fires to the Department of Campus Safety, even if extinguished, and regardless of how minor they may appear. Finally, all members of the campus community are directed to immediately notify the Department of Campus Safety when a student is believed to be missing, as federal law creates certain obligations upon the College in these circumstances.

Thank you for your assistance as we continue Working Together for a Safe Campus.
