Cumberland, Md., Resident Establishes Memorial Scholarship at McDaniel

The $25K scholarship fund establishes an endowed scholarship to be awarded annually to a McDaniel student with financial need from Cumberland or Allegany counties, with preference given to a Fort Hill High School graduate

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Douglas S. Wilson, a resident of Cumberland, Md., has established The Steve Robert Wilson ’75 Memorial Scholarship Fund at McDaniel College, in memory of his brother, through a $25,000 gift to the college.

The Steve Robert Wilson ’75 Memorial Scholarship is to be awarded annually to a student with financial need in good standing, as defined by the college, with preference given to a graduate of Fort Hill High School in Cumberland, Md. (Both Douglas S. and Steve Robert Wilson graduated from Fort Hill High School.)

If no students meet this criteria, preference will be given to a student from Cumberland or Allegany County, Md. The first scholarship will be awarded for the Fall 2019 academic year.

Students do not apply separately for the scholarship, but are selected from the admissions applicant pool. The scholarship is renewable all four years.

Steve Robert Wilson graduated with a bachelor’s degree in economics from McDaniel in 1975. An All-American athlete in track and field, he was inducted into McDaniel College’s Green Terror Sports Hall of Fame posthumously in 1997. Steve Wilson was also a member of the Alpha Gamma Tau fraternity at the college. He passed away in 1986 following a two-year battle with lung cancer.

In addition to the Steve Robert Wilson ’75 Memorial Scholarship, McDaniel College has awarded the Steve Robert Wilson Memorial Award annually since 1986 to the senior male and female athletes with the most outstanding records in track and field. Alexander James Panagakos of Hampstead, Md., and Shantaé Joey-Anne Byro of Baltimore were the most recent recipients of the award for 2018.
