Bruce Friedrich, executive director of The Good Food Institute, which works to create a healthy, humane and sustainable food supply, speaks at McDaniel College’s annual Ridington Lecture on April 11 at 7 p.m., in McDaniel Lounge. The lecture is free and open to the public.

His presentation is titled “Seeds of Disruption: How Markets and Food Technology Will Save the World.” Having held leadership roles at food advocacy organizations promoting animal protein alternatives to meat, dairy and eggs, he explains why these products are gaining popularity and how they will change how the world eats.

As executive director of The Good Food Institute, an organization that works “with scientists, investors and entrepreneurs to make groundbreaking good food a reality,” according to its website, he focuses on the issues of global hunger, environmental consequences, human health consequences and intensification of animal treatment.

Friedrich is also managing trustee of New Crop Capital, a specialized private venture capital fund that invests in entrepreneurs whose products or services replace foods derived from conventional animal agriculture.

He is co-author of “The Animal Activist’s Handbook,” published in 2009, and has contributed to the Huffington Post, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, The Washington Post and The New York Times, among others. He has also appeared on MSNBC, Fox News and CNN. Friedrich graduated magna cum laude from Georgetown Law and also holds degrees from Grinnell College, Johns Hopkins University and the London School of Economics and Political Science.

The annual Ridington lecture honors two long-time teachers at McDaniel, William Robbins Ridington and Edith Farr Ridington. After the Ridingtons’ deaths, their family endowed this annual lectureship, which began in 1991.
