Jeff Groff '01 receives Green Terror Sports Hall of Fame Award

JEFF GROFF RECEIVES GREEN TERROR SPORTS HALL OF FAME AWARD FROM McDANIEL COLLEGE

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Jeff Groff of Martinsburg, W.Va., is a recipient of the Green Terror Sports Hall of Fame award from McDaniel College. He is a 2001 alumnus of the college.

Presented annually during McDaniel’s Homecoming, the Green Terror Sports Hall of Fame award is presented to a graduate and former athlete who has performed outstandingly as an undergraduate athlete and who has contributed to society since leaving the college.

Groff graduated summa cum laude with departmental honors in physics and a minor in chemistry from McDaniel. He was a member of the college’s Honors Program, as well as the Society of Physics Students, and was inducted into the Sigmi Pi Sigma and Phi Beta Kappa honors societies.

As a student-athlete, he was a member of the Centennial Conference champion Green Terror football team in 1997 and 1998. He also received the Jim Steven Freshman Award in 1997.

Additionally, he participated in track and field all four years. The college’s decathlon record holder, he became the Centennial Conference track and field decathlon champion during the event’s inaugural year in 2000 and again in 2001. He received the Steve Robert Wilson ’75 Memorial Award which is awarded annually to the senior male and female athletes with the most outstanding records in track and field.

In 2013, Groff was awarded the McDaniel College Scholar Alumni Award, which is given to graduates of McDaniel’s Honors Program who have demonstrated leadership in career, academic and civic involvement.

Currently, he is an associate professor of physics at Shepherd University, where he chairs the Institute of Environmental and Physical Sciences. He earned a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in applied science from the College of William & Mary, Williamsburg, Va. He grew up in Lancaster, Pa.
