Maryland Supreme Court Chief Justice Matthew Fader delivers Constitution Day lecture

A lecture by Maryland Supreme Court Chief Justice Matthew Fader celebrates Constitution Day on Wednesday, Sept. 17.

In celebration of Constitution Day, the Political Science department hosts a lecture by Maryland Supreme Court Chief Justice Matthew Fader on Wednesday, Sept. 17, at 7 p.m. in Coley Rice Lounge, McDaniel Hall.

Maryland Supreme Court Chief Justice Matthew Fader

Fader was appointed by former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan as chief justice of the Maryland Supreme Court in April 2022. He was previously a member of the state's second-highest court, the Court of Special Appeals, where he began as an associate judge in 2017 and was named chief judge in 2018.

He held several positions with the Maryland Office of the Attorney General. including assistant attorney general, deputy chief, and chief of the civil litigation division. He practiced as an attorney with K&L Gates LLP from 2002 to 2010, starting as an associate and rising to an equity partner. His caseload focused on commercial litigation in federal and state courts.

A native of Towson, Maryland, Fader received a bachelor’s degree in Government and History from the University of Virginia and a Juris Doctor from Yale Law School. 

He also serves as chair of the Maryland Judicial Conference and the Hall of Records Commission and is an ex officio member of the Judges, Masters and Juvenile Justice Committee. He is also chair of the Task Force to Ensure the Safety of Judicial Facilities.

Established in 2005, Constitution Day is celebrated annually in honor of the signing of the constitution on September 17, 1787.
