College Choir in Concert

On Sunday, April 21, at 7 p.m. in Baker Memorial Chapel, the McDaniel College Choir performs works by Gjiello, Runestad, Rosephane Williams, and Mozart at its spring concert. The choir is under the direction of Kyle Engler, senior lecturer of Music, who said, "The program is intended to make our audience feel the power and ecstasy of music that deals with loss and life." Peggy Brengle serves as accompanist and Jordan Greene, senior Cinema major from Baltimore, is the student director.

Student African Drum Ensembles

The Student African Drum Ensembles perform on Thursday, April 25, at 7 p.m. in Naganna Forum. The ensembles are under the direction of McDaniel Music senior adjunct lecturer Pape Demba "Paco" Samb, a Senegalese griot.

Students play traditional West African rhythms on authentic drums handmade in Senegal. Selections include "Kuku," "Lambaa," "Mengani," and "Macaru."

Singing on Stage

On Sunday, April 28, at 7 p.m. in the Dorothy Elderdice Studio Theatre, WMC Alumni Hall, is a performance by the Singing on Stage class taught by Kyle Engler, senior lecturer of Music. Students perform selections from operas and Broadway musicals. Peggy Brengle serves as accompanist.

A Cappella Ensemble

The Green TerrorTones, the premier vocal ensemble at McDaniel, performs Monday, April 29, at 7:30 p.m. in Baker Chapel, under the guidance of Kyle Engler, senior lecturer of Music, with Peggy Brengle serving as accompanist. The students are chosen from the membership of the McDaniel College Choir and perform exclusively unaccompanied vocal music, including a wide variety of world music and vocal jazz.

For the spring concert, the Green TerrorTones performs works by Hoagy Carmichael, The Spice Girls, JVKE, Jason Robert Brown, Aurora, and Kern.

Jazz Night

Jazz Night takes place Thursday, May 2, at 7 p.m. in the Mainstage Theatre, WMC Alumni Hall, directed by Tim Jenkins, senior adjunct lecturer of Music. The concert features styles of jazz, including classic big band swing, bebop, Latin, funk, jazz-rock, and classic blues. Selections include "Night and Day" by Cole Porter, "Double Rainbow" by Antonio Carlos Jobim, "Dreamsville" by Henry Mancini, and "So What" by Miles Davis, among others.

Jazz Night Spring 2024

College Band Concert

The McDaniel College Band performs Friday, May 3, at 7 p.m. in the Mainstage Theatre, WMC Alumni Hall. Directed by senior lecturer Linda Kirkpatrick, the College Band features nearly 50 musicians, including McDaniel students, as well as McDaniel Music faculty members Mike Hirsh and Rachel Andrews, band alumni and community musicians, performing musical selections ranging from classical to pops.

According to Kirkpatrick, the spring concert honors two American composers who recently passed away, Robert W. Smith and Peter Schickele a.k.a. P.D.Q. Bach, with performances of "The Divine Comedy" by Robert W. Smith and "Grand Serenade for an Awful Lot of Winds and Percussion" by P.D.Q. Bach. The band also performs "An American Elegy" by Frank Ticheli, a commissioned work in memory of those who lost their lives at Columbine High School for the 25th anniversary. Other works include "Arabesque" by Samuel Hazo and selections from "The Greatest Showman."

College Band Concert Spr24

Westminster Symphony Orchestra

The Westminster Symphony Orchestra Concert takes place Saturday, May 4, at 3 p.m. at Scott Center, Carroll Community College.

Directed by senior music lecturer Linda Kirkpatrick with Cindy Rosenberg serving as assistant director, the Westminster Symphony Orchestra is composed of McDaniel students and music faculty, Carroll Community College students and music faculty, and community musicians.

The concert features music from Star Wars in honor of May 4th, including the "William Tell" Overture, "Carnival of the Animals" with narration by Amanda Jozkowski, and "The Star Wars Epic: Part II."

McDaniel Music faculty members in the orchestra are Rachel Andrews, staff accompanist; Michael Hirsh, adjunct lecturer of Music; David Motter, senior adjunct lecturer of Music; Mindy Niles, senior adjunct lecturer of Music; Nicholas Reider, senior adjunct lecturer of Music; and Robert Sirois, senior adjunct lecturer of Music.

Gospel Choir Concert

The Gospel Choir’s spring concert is Saturday, May 4, at 7 p.m., in the Mainstage Theatre, WMC Alumni Hall. McDaniel's Gospel Choir performs traditional and contemporary gospel music, as well as spirituals, under the direction of senior adjunct lecturer Shelley Ensor with accompanist Alice Dorsey.
