McDaniel Weekly - April 14, 2020

As you move into the closing weeks of the semester, consider if it would be helpful to break your class assignments up into smaller post it note-size tasks. Remind yourself that each day is an opportunity to get through a few more! Read on for important updates on the room selection process for next year, other office highlights, and a special check-in for seniors from Dean Breslin!

computer covered in post-it notes

I LOVE post-it notes! For me, they bring order to chaos and help me to determine a clear path forward. I am particularly fond of the bright colored ones with lines – lines are essential because they allow for the orderly writing down of tasks that I need to accomplish next. Last week I created a post-it note for each project that I am trying to complete, so I am able to see what needs to happen and when. This 15-minute process calms my racing thoughts about how I am going to get it all done. As you move into the closing weeks of the semester, consider if it would be helpful to break your class assignments up into smaller post it note-size tasks. Remind yourself that each day is an opportunity to get through a few more!

One post it-note that I have staring at me every day is residence hall move out … as soon as Governor Hogan of Maryland lifts the stay at home restriction, the College will inform everyone about how to retrieve personal belongings from the residence halls in a safe and orderly manner. If you are in need of an essential belonging (i.e. academic materials, medications, etc) please send an email to reslife@mcdaniel.edu to discuss how we can help to get you that item.

A note from the Registrar’s Desk

Honor and Conduct Board selection for fall 2020

New student members are needed for the Honor and Conduct Board for next year. Members take part in monthly training sessions and typically serve on five to eight hearings per year. The Board is an opportunity for students to hold one another accountable to each other and the McDaniel College community. If this kind of opportunity sounds interesting to you, click here to learn about the application process.

Have you heard of an “exercise snack”?

We all know exercise is good for us. Some of us may be using this current reality to augment established workout routines. Others may be struggling because of the change in environment or access to equipment. Whenever we need to jumpstart our physical activity, the idea of “Exercise Snacks” can be worth exploring. Start small, celebrate success, and build consistency

Preventing “Zoom-bombing”

Some hackers are bothering Zoom participants with slurs, mockery and pornographic images. Recently, the FBI released a how-to guide to prevent these cyberattacks, with tips, including restricted screen-share settings and password protecting meetings.

If this occurs in a McDaniel class/event Zoom session, contact the Director of Campus Safety (eimmler@mcdaniel.edu) and IT (helpdesk@mcdaniel.edu) with the following information: date and time of the Zoom meeting/class, number of participants, participant list, and any images or screenshots of the content that was displayed during the hack.

Passover meal photo contest

In honor of Passover, JSU and ODI are sponsoring a Passover meal photo contest for April 16, 2020. We are asking students to post a photo of their Passover meal and you can win a prize. Please share a story of your meal on instagram with the words “Passover meal” and tag JSU via @jsumcdaniel. Winners will be selected at random.

Also, don’t forget: ODI sponsors Winning Wednesday on the ODI Instagram every week! Answer questions, win swag.

A special note for seniors from Lisa Breslin, Associate Dean of Student Academic Life

I share the pride that my colleagues have for each of you as they check Blackboard, Zoom meetings, emails, phone calls and texts to piece together a college experience that none of us anticipated. Hopefully you are all finding moments when you realize that as challenging as things may feel at the moment, it is a little better because you are at McDaniel College. Perhaps it’s an unexpected phone call to see how you are doing. Perhaps it’s Trivia with Dean Towle, or, soon, a virtual bonfire with me! (Only at McDaniel…)

You can do this. We can do this.

Remember, there are people constantly looking for ways for you to close the semester on the strongest note possible and, when life allows, celebrate all that you have done.

From my home to yours, peace.
