McDaniel Weekly - May 5, 2020

This semester you have certainly been hit with a lot and still kept moving forward. Your accomplishments may not look as you expected them to or be celebrated as you thought they would, but they are all still successes and I hope you view them in that spirit. In next week’s newsletter you will hear from many others who like me want to acknowledge and congratulate you for all the ways you succeeded this semester!

From Liz Towle, Dean of Students

A few weeks ago I told you about my love of post-it notes. This week it’s about my love of Rocky movies and lines from those movies. Here’s one:

“Life’s not about how hard of a hit you can give … it’s about how many you can take, and still keep moving forward.”

A wonderful highlight of that student success is the Contrast Literary Magazine. Congratulations to all the student contributors and a big thank you and well done to Marya Kuratova and Nathan Wright, the student editors.

Other important information that follows is about the Class of 2020’s Senior Week planning, residence hall move out, managing exam week stress and summer classes. You can also see my amazingly awesome mask on OSE Instagram (link below).

Class of 2020 Celebration

President Casey has announced that McDaniel will be holding a Celebration Day for the Class of 2020 on Saturday, May 23, with virtual events throughout the day to recognize our seniors and their achievements. We hope that friends and classmates will also support the Class of 2020 by sharing photos or messages using #McDaniel20 throughout the week of May 18. Visit the Class of 2020 Celebration page for the full schedule of virtual events and ways you can cheer on our graduates!

Residence Hall move out information

The State of Maryland has given McDaniel the okay to begin the residence hall move-out process. By mid-next week, students will receive an email that outlines the health and safety guidelines to be followed during the move-out process and provides access to an online form that allows residents to sign up for a specific move-out time. With the health and safety of everyone in mind, we will limit the number of students who can move out of each building at one time. The move-out process will begin the week of May 18-22.

Housing deposit reminder

Just a reminder that the $200 housing deposit is due by May 12. Click here for information about the upcoming room selection process, including instructions on how to log into our online housing system, how to pay the deposit, create roommate groups, and more.

Updates for seniors

A newsletter was sent on Friday, May 1 to graduating seniors with important information from key offices to ensure that they have easy access to everything needed as they complete their final semester. Seniors: remember to fill out the survey to share what items you want to see take place during Senior Week. Submit an individual photo of yourself to ocm@mcdaniel.edu by Friday, May 15 with the subject line: 2020 Senior Slides.

Celebrating McDaniel’s Phenomenal Women

Every year, ODI observes Women’s History month by celebrating McDaniel Women with the annual Phenomenal Women Ceremony. Since we could not do an in-person ceremony, ODI has put together a video honoring each nominee and announcing this year's Faculty, Staff and Student Phenomenal Woman award recipients. The Video will be posted on the ODI Instagram page the week after final exams. ODI wishes you all the best during final exams. We miss you and cannot wait to see you again!

Join McDaniel’s NAACP Chapter

The CEO, ODI, and OSE are working to bring a NAACP Youth and and College Chapter to McDaniel College this fall. The NAACP welcomes students from all backgrounds, ethnicities, gender identities, and sexual orientations to work on issues of racial justice. Click here if you’re interested in participating in the student-led planning process.

The Wellness Center staff is sending you good vibes as you push through this last week of classes. Take a few moments to pause and reflect on a couple specific successes you have accomplished this year. The fact that you are persevering during this pandemic should be #1!

Understandably, you may be experiencing higher than normal stress during these final weeks of the semester. You can check out this useful Student’s Guide to Dealing with College Stress and this blog about making final exam stress work for you.
