Hello, everyone! It's nice to virtually meet you. I'm writing to you from my brand-new office, located across from the Pub in the Roj Student Center. You can find OSE right behind the welcome desk! I'm on campus most Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays this fall so feel free to visit, say hello, and stop by! 😊

Among many other things I enjoy in Student Engagement, I have a huge passion for student government, leadership, and advocacy. My vision is to help you turn what you practice into your purpose! Which leads me to address the upcoming Student Government Special Election....

From Heidi Huber, Director of the Wellness Center

Hello everyone!

I continue to be incredibly impressed with the resilience you are showing during these challenging times. Maintaining wellness (physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual) these days does not come easily and requires even more planning, commitment, and self-compassion than usual. Keep doing your best to prioritize your well-being because without it, you won’t be able to achieve all those wonderful academic goals.

If you need support to get your wellness back on track, please remember the Wellness Center is here for you! Remember that the Wellness Center is currently NOT open for walk-in appointments. Please call us at 410-857-2243 during office hours (Monday-Friday, 8:30am-4:30pm).

Here are some reminders about how the Wellness Center services are currently working:

  • Covid-19 related care:

The Wellness Center is focused solely on COVID-related care this semester. If you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19 or have concerns about exposure, please call us during office hours. After hours, contact the Department of Campus Safety at 410-857-2202.

  • Other medical related care:

Through the College’s partnership with LifeBridge Health, you can get all other medical needs met through telehealth or in-person appointments at the Carroll Health Group Primary Care office at College Square. Call their office at 410-751-2592, identify yourself as a McDaniel student, and get set up with an appointment.

  • Counseling Services

    • The Wellness Center is providing counseling services, primarily over a telehealth platform. Call us during office hours or email wellness@mcdaniel.edu to set up an appointment.

    • If you are experiencing URGENT mental health needs that can’t wait, call the office during business hours to talk to a counselor. After hours, contact the Department of Campus Safety to access an on-call team which includes a counselor.

Wishing you all a successful second half of the semester!

Warmly,

Heidi Huber

Director of the Wellness Center

Sign up to run an Interfaith Zoom session

The CEO and ODEI are putting together an Interfaith and Service Zoom panel series -- and we need presenters! The presentation must focus on how your faith or spiritual practice connects with service, volunteerism, and community. It can be in a format of your choosing and you can select a faith or spiritual leader to present with. Please sign up by October 16th.

Support those with Invisible Disabilities

ODEI and SASS invite you to the Invisible Disabilities Awareness program on Wednesday, October 7th, at 7pm on Zoom. The program will take place on Zoom and is full of eye-opening information, touching stories, tips and solutions anyone can use, and a bit of inspiration.

This program is for those of us who struggle with something others can’t see, whether cognitive, emotional, or physical. It’s also for anyone who wants to be supportive of students, friends, family, coworkers, or clients who have unseen challenges.

Understand mixed-status families and voting

On Thursday, October 8th, at 7pm, please join the McDaniel Votes committee for: What Does It Mean to Be an American? Mixed-Status Immigrant Families and Their Experiences with Voting, Immigration Policies, and U.S. Belonging. Mixed-status families include family members with different immigration statuses.

This virtual presentation will review some of the myths, challenges, and possibilities that apply to undocumented immigrants, DACA recipients, and mixed-status families as they relate to voting, U.S. elections, immigration politics, and American identity. This presentation will take place on Zoom.

Register for the virtual SmartTalk

On Thursday, October 22nd, at 7pm, President Casey will lead a conversation with Ludley Howard ‘84, President and CEO of Pride Youth Services. Howard’s vision of creating effective, culturally competent services for African American youth and their families led to the founding of Pride Youth Services. He remains committed to empowering the lives of young people from diverse experiences and backgrounds. Click here to RSVP.

File your FAFSA

On October 1st, the 2021-2022 FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) opened up on studentaid.gov. You MUST complete the FAFSA every year -- it helps determine your eligibility for federal, state, and need-based financial aid for the 21-22 academic year. This year, students who file the FAFSA before October 31st will be entered into a raffle to be one of three winners of a McDaniel beanie and a $25 gift card to Starbucks!!! Email the Financial Aid Office (finaid@mcdaniel.edu) with any questions.

Prepare to VOTE

From Monday, September 14th through Friday, October 16th, stop by the McDaniel Votes registration table near the Pub on the mid-level of the Roj Student Center. A representative will be there on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 11am-2pm and 5pm-7pm, as well as on Fridays, from 11am-2pm. This is sponsored by Hoover Library, OSE, ODEI, McDaniel Political Science Dept, and Carroll County League of Women Voters.

Totally unrelated sidenote: the first student reading this to email Amanda (agelber@mcdaniel.edu) with the word “October” wins a blanket.
