A Message from President Jasken in Memory of September 11

While I recognize that many of our undergraduate students were not even born in 2001 or were too young then to have their own memories of this day, there is no denying that this singular event has had a lasting effect on our country. It is a day for us to remember those who were lost; it is a day for us to all come together, just as we did on that fateful day, uniting in the values that we hold dear as stated in our First Principles.

Dear McDaniel Faculty, Staff, and Students,

Tomorrow is a day of remembrance. A day in which we join with others across the nation to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

I want to bring your attention to a few ways that our community is observing this anniversary:

  • Nearly 3,000 flags have been placed in the quad between ANW and DMC by our Office of Student Engagement and student volunteers to pay tribute to all who died that day in New York City, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C.
  • Not only will the American flag be flown at half-mast, but a wreath has been placed at the flag located in the McTeer-Zepp Plaza in commemoration of this anniversary.
  • A moment of silence will occur before the National Anthem during tomorrow’s home football game at Kenneth R. Gill Stadium.

My sincere thanks to all of the student volunteers who took the time to place the nearly 3000 flags in memory of the lives lost on that fateful day 20 years ago.

Please join me in paying tribute to the lives lost 20 years ago.

Sincerely,

Julia
