To more fully support the mental health needs of our students, the Wellness Center created the Wellness Extended Support Program (WESP) to provide long-term individual therapy and clinical case management services right here on campus. This fee-based program is available for up to 20 students who need ongoing mental health support beyond the free short-term and crisis intervention services available to all students.

How do I know if WESP is right for me?

There are a few questions to consider when deciding whether WESP or regular counseling in the Wellness Center is right for you:

  • What is your previous experience with therapy and how did it go?
  • What techniques or approaches have been most helpful to you?
  • What challenges are you currently facing?
  • Would you benefit from weekly mental health counseling or occasional drop-ins?
  • Do you need clinical case management?

The Wellness Center works with students who apply for WESP on an individual level to determine best fit for available campus services.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Wellness Extended Support Program (WESP)?

WESP is a fee-based program offering weekly individual counseling and case management for students needing long-term mental health support.

How do I apply for WESP?

How does WESP differ from regular counseling at the Wellness Center?

WESP guarantees weekly individual counseling sessions with a dedicated counselor and includes comprehensive case management unlike the limited free short-term counseling options.

Who provides counseling through WESP?

Licensed mental health professionals in the Wellness Center.

How are students matched with counselors?

Counselor assignments are based on relevant clinical expertise and student preferences for therapeutic approach and style. Understanding the student’s treatment goals and what they are looking for in a counselor is an important part of the WESP screening intake meeting.

Can my health insurance cover WESP?

No, WESP cannot be billed to insurance and is billed directly to students.

Are scholarships available for WESP?

Limited scholarships may be available for students with financial need.

Is WESP available during the summer?

Yes, WESP is now available during the summer.

What services are not provided by WESP?

WESP does not provide eating disorder treatment that requires medical intervention or the level of care associated with intensive outpatient programs, partial or inpatient hospitalization, or residential care.  WESP does not include medication management.

Can WESP be used alongside other mental health services?

Yes, you can enroll in WESP while utilizing other mental health services. However, we do not recommend that students engage in ongoing weekly individual counseling with WESP and with another community provider at the same time unless there are clearly defined and distinct treatment goals for each provider. With authorization, the Wellness Center can coordinate services with other providers or individuals.

If I am registered with SASS and enrolled in WESP, will I be able to see the SASS mental health counselor for my weekly appointments?

The Wellness Center will make an effort to ensure that you are matched with a mental health counselor who can meet your needs for the duration of your WESP enrollment but cannot guarantee that you will be able to meet with the SASS mental health counselor.

What happens if WESP spots fill up?

If no spots are available in WESP, the Wellness Center can work with you to find alternative support with the free services available on campus or can help you locate support off campus.
