John Baugher M.S. '06

Westminster High School Principal John Baugher M.S. '06 reflects on how his McDaniel master's degree changed his leadership style and has allowed him to become a mentor.

“When you’re a kid in high school, you don’t necessarily think of your teachers as human,” says John Baugher M.S. ’06. But he’s trying to change that as principal of Westminster High School. He taught for 15 years and during the last 7 years of his teaching career, he began his master’s degree program in Educational Administration at McDaniel College.

With days starting at 5:45 a.m. and being on-call 24/7, as a teacher, coach and advisor, Baugher is thankful that McDaniel had the flexibility he needed and worked with him to extend his master’s program when he needed it.

“The most rewarding part … is when you’re talking to a kid and you see the kid’s eyes light up,” Baugher says. “That’s why educators do it.”
