Librarian proposes holiday gift ideas during Books Sandwiched In

For the 22nd consecutive year, Books Sandwiched In offered a comprehensive guide to holiday giving, literary style.

During the hour-long session on Nov. 21, Jane Sharpe, associate librarian emerita, provided her top picks of fiction and non-fiction titles for children and adults, including biographies, cookbooks and picture books.

Every one of the books were published in 2013 – and all 32 books were read by Sharpe before earning her gift approval. The list includes a novel by a McDaniel alumna, a historical fiction book by a local Carroll County, Md., author, as well as the Hoover Library Book Club’s next read, “A Week in Winter,” by Maeve Binchy.

The book club, which held its inaugural meeting in September, meets once a month at 4:30 p.m. in the Hoover Library Board room. On Dec. 5, Sharpe and the other members will discuss “This Side of Paradise” by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Brynne Norton, public services management librarian at Hoover Library, enjoys the chance to share ideas about books with interesting people from McDaniel and the community.

During the discussion of their first selection, “Mary Coin,” by Marisa Shiver, that week’s discussion leader arranged a conference call with the author.

“I think it’s good to read outside of your comfort zone, and the selections that we have read so far are not books I would have usually picked up,” said Norton.
