McDaniel volleyball coach Jessica Cortese Wolverton earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Thirty Under 30 Award and men’s and women’s basketball teams finish winning seasons in ECAC play.
Cortese Wolverton was one of the 30 coaches honored with the sixth annual award, which was created to honor 30 of the up-and-coming volleyball coaches under 30 years old in the sport at all levels of the game. The second-year Green Terror mentor guided her squad to a 19-9 season. The team appeared in the Centennial Conference (CC) tournament semifinals after posting a 7-3 record in CC play. McDaniel also advanced to the ECAC Southwest tournament.
She was named the CC Coach of the Year following the season and guided the squad from 0-10 in her first year to 7-3 and the Green Terror's first tournament appearance since 2007.
In women’s basketball, Emma Wingerd of Pittsburgh, Pa., led the Green Terror (21-7) to the runner-up finish in the 2014 ECAC South tournament with 12 points and 11 rebounds while Lindsey Nichols of Wilmington, Del., contributed 10 points off the bench. Catholic strung together a 16-0 run late in the first half to turn a tie game into a double-digit lead March 9 then staved off a McDaniel rally for a 75-63 victory.
In men’s basketball, Tim Stewart of Smyrna, Del., recorded 15 points, six rebounds and three assists to lead the Green Terror (18-10), whose season finished with a program record-tying 18 wins. Neumann University went on a 16-4 run midway through the second half to open up a double-digit lead March 8, defeating McDaniel 73-65 in the semifinals of the 2014 ECAC Southeast tournament.
