Samantha Wilson, a senior at McDaniel College, has been named a Fulbright finalist for an English Teaching Assistantship (ETA) in the West African nation of Côte d'Ivoire or Ivory Coast. Wilson of Sedro-Woolley, Wash., is a double major in French and Political Science with a specialization in International Studies.
McDaniel senior William Martin of Winchester, Va., took top prize of $10,000 April 9 at the Innovation Challenge finals for Stylish Thrift, which provides reasonably priced new and vintage sportswear online, giving everyone the opportunity to support their team and show their style without sacrificing quality.
Before Valerie Lamb ’18 reported to work for her summer internship, she knew little about the U.S. Mint or its Heritage Assets Program. The Miami native had never lived in Washington, D.C., nor learned to navigate its metro system. She was uncertain if she would like the work and nervous about managing life in the city. But Lamb, a Political Science & International Studies major with an Acting minor, recognized the valuable opportunity and seized it.
While gathering real-world experiences and exploring careers at the famed National Aquarium, senior Allison Parker also made a lot of friends — aquarists, herpetologists, conservationists and an eight-legged creature named Tallulah.
Four McDaniel students have received prestigious Fulbright awards for the 2017–2018 academic year. Seniors Ema Barnes and Jaime Calderon and graduate students Mariah Ligas and Maggie Myers have been named Fulbright finalists for English Teaching Assistantships (ETA) to teach English in the Czech Republic, Andorra, Romania and South Korea, respectively.
McDowell County, W. Va., isn’t the most popular spring break destination by any measure, but don’t tell that to the 13 McDaniel students, led by senior Jeb Shingler and professor Mona Becker, who grabbed warm clothes, solid shoes and work gloves before heading to this impoverished region of southern Appalachia for their mid-semester R&R.
